Are You a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

1. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) 

The range of your Body Mass Index (BMI) is important for this type of surgery, if you have a BMI over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, you can be a candidate for bariatric surgery. 

2. AGE LIMIT 

To be eligible for bariatric surgery, you must be between 16 and 70 years of age (with some exceptions) and morbidly obese (weighing at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight and having a BMI of 40). 

3. GENDER 

There is no gender barrier to the surgery. Anyone can opt for bariatric surgery but only with a specialist’s consultation. 

4. IDEAL BODY WEIGHT 

When your body weight is more than 100 lbs. beyond your ideal body weight, you can opt for bariatric surgery with the doctor’s consultation and out of your interest. 

5. MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS 

People with Mental health problems associated with excess weight can also opt for bariatric surgery and get positive results with the help of healthcare professionals. 

6. LIFESTYLE CHANGES 

When you feel like you are unable to achieve healthy body weight for a sustained period even with workouts, diets, and other lifestyle modifications, you can discuss bariatric surgery with your doctor.
