Query 1- What is Metabolic Surgery?

Metabolic syndrome is the name given to a cluster of conditions that occur together, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal triglyceride levels. It can be reversed by losing weight, exercising, and making dietary changes but if it fails, metabolic surgery is an option to reverse metabolic syndrome, mostly with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Query 2- What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is for all people with extreme weight and those with morbid obesity.

Query 3- What are the common types of weight loss (bariatric) surgeries?

  • Gastric Bypass: This procedure involves a surgeon creating a walnut-sized pouch with stomach tissue. The surgeon then attaches the pouch to the small intestine so that food bypasses the stomach and enters directly into the small intestine. This restricts portion size and limits the absorption of foods, a process called “malabsorption.”
  • Gastric Banding involves a surgeon placing an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. Gastric banding is adjustable; the amount of food a person’s stomach can hold can be altered during a hospital visit by adjusting the tightness of the band around the stomach.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy involves a surgeon removing 80 to 85 percent of the stomach and stapling the remaining portion of the stomach together. This is a restrictive procedure that limits the amount of food you can consume.

Query 4 – For which BMI range (Body Mass Index) will metabolic and bariatric surgery be performed?

  • Metabolic surgery can be performed on any patient with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 in the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Bariatric surgery can be performed on someone who has a BMI over 35 and other obesity-associated comorbidities or on a patient who has a BMI of 40 without any co-existing health conditions.

Query 5- Are there any side effects or harmful effects due to bariatric or metabolic surgery?

Risk and side effects can vary based on the procedure. Consult your physician and get their suggestions according to your body type before performing the surgery.
